IDENTIFYING YOUR BALL IN A HAZARD
Two rules relating to this have been amended in the 2008 Rules of Golf.
Rule 12-2
If your ball comes to rest in a hazard (eg bunker), but you need to lift it to identify it, you may do so, without penalty. [Announce your intention to your playing partner and mark the ball before moving it].
Rule 15-3
If you make a stroke at a wrong ball, anywhere on the course, including in a hazard (eg bunker), the penalty is:
Matchplay - loss of hole
Strokeplay - 2 stroke penalty
Exception in both cases is if the ball is moving in water in a water hazard, when the shot is not counted and no penalty incurred.
